Lunin, video (loop), 2:30, 2023.

The pastels set within the 26 ‘columns’ of their box are each brought to their own duration, reduced to dust, emptied into a field of color.

The project is still under way. The resulting works (a selection of which are displayed here) provide an idea of the potential ‘whole’ – between the stochastic and the sentimental, they become the sum of their emptied container.

For four years, I taught Mr. Lunin to draw. White haired, blue eyed, sharp nosed, and tender handed: he looked deliberately and drew carefully. He had a penchant for birds and the occasional seascape, for feathers and chalk skies. When he died, he left me his box of pastels.

Lunin. Pastel with fixative on newsprint sheets, 36 x 24 in each.
